ALLENTOWN, Pa. - At Allentown's Fountain Park, music and the sounds of games being played filled the air on Sunday.

"This is a moment of clarity today for me here at Fountain Park," said Jeani Garcia with Promise Neighborhoods.

It is a park where Garcia said her son, Kareem Fedd, spent a lot of time.

"This is his park, this is where he played, this is where he grew up, so it's really important, symbolic to have this event here for us today," said Garcia.

Garcia said her 17-year-old son was murdered on this day in Allentown 13 years ago.

"Kareem was one of the most loyalist people that I know. He was funny, he had a great sense of humor and he was just a good guy," said Garcia.

The community came together for the first-ever Kareem's Community Day in his honor.

"We're trying to change the day into something positive and bring the community together, especially for our youth," said Garcia.

The event includes school supply giveaways, childcare information, free haircuts, braiding, games and dancing.

Fred Goldstein gave away gun locks as part of the Lock It For Love initiative.

"The goal is to try to cut down on the amount of shootings of children by children. The other thing we're hoping to prevent are suicides. If somebody has to take two minutes to unlock their gun, it gives them time to think about what it is they're doing," said Goldstein.

Garcia said there is one thing in particular she wants people take away from Kareem's Community Day.

"It takes a community to make sure that our youth are successful, especially starting school tomorrow. We want to start them with a great day," said Garcia.
